Russia had more earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in 2025 than any other country: 1,871 of the 8,556 in the US Geological Survey's catalogue. Nearly all of them followed the magnitude 8.8 Kamchatka earthquake of 29 July, which we covered in our post on the biggest earthquakes of 2025. Five new charts break the year down by country, by US state and by depth.
Russia, Indonesia and Japan lead the count
The chart of earthquakes by country puts Indonesia second with 692 and Japan third with 617; 1,790 of Russia's 1,871 were around the Kamchatka Peninsula. Counting only stronger shocks, of magnitude 5.5 or more, the strong earthquakes chart still has Russia first with 110 of the world's 513.
The strongest in each country
The strongest earthquake by country chart runs from Russia's magnitude 8.8 to Myanmar's 7.7 on 28 March, the deadliest earthquake of the year according to Wikipedia's list, and China's 7.1 in the Tibetan Plateau on 7 January. The world had 16 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or more and 145 of magnitude 6 or more, the same totals Wikipedia gives.
Alaska dominates the United States
The US states chart counts earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or more: Alaska had 6,629 of the 9,381 recorded in the 50 states, more than all other states combined, and California 1,083. The deepest earthquakes chart shows how far down they can start: the deepest of the year, 648.3 km, was beneath eastern Peru.

How the countries are assigned
USGS describes each earthquake by its distance from the nearest named place, and these charts count it for that place's country, so offshore earthquakes go to the nearest coast. 1,577 earthquakes, 18.4 per cent, happened on mid-ocean ridges and in other open-ocean or disputed areas and are not assigned to any country.
