US States With the Most Earthquakes in 2025
What this chart shows. The 21 US states with at least 5 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater in 2025, from the USGS catalogue. Alaska had 6,629, 70.7 per cent of the 9,381 recorded across the 50 states, far ahead of California with 1,083 and New Mexico with 301.
How the data is collected. The catalogue combines data from the regional seismic networks that monitor each part of the country. An earthquake is counted for the state named in its USGS description; offshore earthquakes, such as those along the Aleutian Islands, are counted for the nearest state.
Background. Alaska lies where the Pacific plate dives under North America, the same kind of boundary that produces the largest earthquakes on Earth; 2,830 of its earthquakes were magnitude 3 or more. New Mexico, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma appear although they are far from any plate boundary.
Limits. Small earthquakes are detected more reliably where seismometers are dense, so counts near magnitude 2.5 are not fully comparable between states. Puerto Rico and other territories are not included.

Analysis
Alaska recorded more magnitude 2.5+ earthquakes in 2025 than all other states combined, 6,629 against 2,752. Nevada had 254, and Texas, with 255, had more than Oregon or Washington.
