What this chart shows. The 20 deepest earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater in 2025, by the depth of the rupture below the surface in kilometres, from the USGS catalogue. The deepest was a magnitude 5.6 earthquake 648.3 km beneath eastern Peru on 11 March. 12 of the 20 were in the Fiji region.
How the data is collected. USGS calculates depth together with the location from the arrival times of seismic waves at stations around the world. Each earthquake is labelled here with the nearest country or region named by USGS, the date and its magnitude.
Background. Earthquakes deeper than about 300 km are called deep-focus earthquakes. They happen inside old ocean plates that have sunk into the mantle, which is why they cluster beneath Fiji and Tonga in the Pacific and beneath Peru, Bolivia and Argentina in South America: 5 of the 20 were there.
Limits. Depth estimates carry uncertainty of several kilometres, and some are fixed at round values when the data cannot resolve them. Deep earthquakes are rarely damaging because their energy spreads out before it reaches the surface.

Analysis
All 20 were deeper than 553 km, and the strongest among them was a magnitude 5.7. Russia's deepest in the list, 561.3 km, was near Slavyanka in the Far East.
