What this chart shows. The 19 countries and territories with at least 5 earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 or greater in 2025, from the USGS catalogue. Russia led with 110, followed by Japan with 39 and Indonesia with 36. The world had 513 earthquakes of this size, and 145 of magnitude 6 or more.
How the data is collected. Each earthquake in the USGS catalogue is assigned to the country of the nearest named place given in its description. Magnitudes are the preferred values chosen by USGS, usually moment magnitude for larger events, which measures the energy released by the fault rupture.
Background. On the magnitude scale each whole step means about 32 times more energy, so a magnitude 5.5 releases roughly 32 times the energy of a 4.5. Japan and Indonesia had 39 and 36; Afghanistan, with 6, is the only country in the chart without a coastline.
Limits. Countries with 4 such earthquakes, among them Ethiopia, New Zealand and Panama, are left out. 110 of the 513 strong earthquakes lay in open-ocean or disputed areas and are not counted for any country.
