Strongest Earthquake in Each Country in 2025

What this chart shows. The magnitude of the strongest earthquake in each country or territory in 2025, for the 22 places whose strongest was at least magnitude 6.3, from the USGS catalogue. The strongest of the year was the magnitude 8.8 Kamchatka earthquake in Russia on 29 July, followed by Myanmar's magnitude 7.7 on 28 March and magnitude 7.6 earthquakes in the Cayman Islands and Japan.

How the data is collected. The values are USGS's preferred magnitudes. Each earthquake is assigned to the country of the nearest named place, so the Cayman Islands earthquake of 8 February is counted there although its epicentre was about 210 km out at sea.

Background. The world had 16 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or more in 2025 and 145 of magnitude 6 or more, the same totals as Wikipedia's list of earthquakes in 2025. According to that list, the Myanmar earthquake was the deadliest of the year. China's strongest was a magnitude 7.1 in the southern Tibetan Plateau on 7 January.

Limits. Three earthquakes of magnitude 7.4 to 7.6 in the Drake Passage, between South America and Antarctica, are not assigned to any country. Magnitude says how much energy was released, not how much damage was done, which depends on depth, distance from towns and building quality.
