Countries With the Most Earthquakes in 2025

What this chart shows. The 20 countries and territories with the most earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater in 2025, in the catalogue of the US Geological Survey (USGS). Russia had 1,871, 21.9 per cent of the 8,556 recorded worldwide, followed by Indonesia with 692 and Japan with 617.

How the data is collected. The data comes from the USGS Comprehensive Catalog (ComCat), which combines solutions from seismic networks around the world; USGS considers its global list complete from about magnitude 4.5 upward. USGS describes each earthquake by its distance and direction from the nearest named place, and the chart counts it for the country of that place, so offshore earthquakes are counted for the nearest country. 1,577 of the 8,556 earthquakes, 18.4 per cent, lie in open-ocean or disputed areas, such as mid-ocean ridges, the Drake Passage and the Kuril Islands, and are not assigned to any country.

Background. Russia's total is almost entirely the aftershock sequence of the magnitude 8.8 Kamchatka earthquake of 29 July: 1,790 of its 1,871 earthquakes were around the Kamchatka Peninsula, 1,604 of them on or after the main shock. Most of the other leaders sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Limits. A count treats a magnitude 4.5 the same as a magnitude 8, and a single large earthquake can add hundreds of aftershocks. Earthquake totals also change slightly as USGS reviews and revises events after they happen.
