Countries With the Most Tuberculosis Deaths 2024
About This Dataset
Countries With the Most Tuberculosis Deaths 2024
What this chart shows. The 24 countries with the most tuberculosis deaths among HIV-negative people in 2024. India had 300,000, 27.8% of the world's 1,080,000, followed by Indonesia with 118,000 and DR Congo with 59,000. The list stops at 24 because Cameroon and Somalia are tied for 25th.
How the data is collected. Under the international classification of diseases, a tuberculosis death in a person with HIV is recorded as an HIV death, so WHO reports TB deaths among HIV-negative people separately, and this chart follows that definition. Where death registration is complete WHO uses it directly; elsewhere it estimates deaths from the number of cases and the share that end in death, with a range: worldwide 987,000 to 1,180,000.
Background. Deaths fell 18.8% worldwide between 2015 and 2024, from 1,330,000. Nigeria cut its toll from 118,000 to 56,000 and South Sudan by 60.8%. Deaths were higher than in 2015 in Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Myanmar, South Africa, Angola and Brazil; Indonesia's rose from 98,000 to 118,000.
Limits. WHO's headline total of TB deaths is higher than the figure here because it adds deaths among people with HIV, which are not broken down by country in this dataset. Rounding creates ties: China, South Africa and Angola each had 25,000. Estimates for countries without complete death registration carry wide ranges; India's runs from 233,000 to 375,000.
