Countries With the Most Tuberculosis Cases 2024
About This Dataset
Countries With the Most Tuberculosis Cases 2024
What this chart shows. The 25 countries with the most people who fell ill with tuberculosis in 2024, by WHO's estimate. India had 2,710,000 new cases, 25.3% of the world's 10.7 million, followed by Indonesia with 1,080,000 and the Philippines with 724,000. The eight countries at the top, which also include China, Pakistan, Nigeria, DR Congo and Bangladesh, account for 67.1% of all cases.
How the data is collected. The number of people who fall ill each year cannot be counted directly, because many cases are never diagnosed. WHO estimates it for every country from case notifications, national prevalence surveys, death registration and inventory studies that measure under-reporting, and publishes the results with an uncertainty range in its annual Global Tuberculosis Report. India's range runs from 2,330,000 to 3,160,000.
Background. Worldwide, cases fell 3.6% between 2015 and 2024, from 11.1 million. South Africa more than halved its count, from 561,000 to 249,000, and Russia's fell by 49.5%. China dropped from 905,000 to 696,000, while Indonesia rose from 852,000 and overtook it. In 14 of the 25 countries the estimate was higher in 2024 than in 2015.
Limits. These are estimates, not counts, and WHO revises earlier years when new survey data arrive, so figures for 2015 may differ from those published at the time. Values are rounded, which is why Thailand and Brazil share 104,000. The chart shows absolute numbers; populous countries rank high even where the rate per person is moderate.
