Countries With the Most People Living With HIV 2025
About This Dataset
Countries With the Most People Living With HIV 2025
What this chart shows. The 25 countries with the most people living with HIV in 2025, in millions, among the 138 countries for which UNAIDS published an estimate. South Africa had 7.6 million, 18.5% of the 41.0 million people living with HIV worldwide, followed by India with 2.6 million and Mozambique with 2.5 million. There is no 2025 estimate for the United States, China, Russia, Ukraine, Côte d'Ivoire, Iran, Iraq, Türkiye, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Poland and Canada, so they cannot appear in this ranking.
How the data is collected. The figures are UNAIDS estimates, republished by the World Health Organization in its Global Health Observatory. Each year national teams feed surveillance data, household surveys, antenatal clinic testing and treatment records into the Spectrum modelling software, and UNAIDS reviews and publishes the results with a lower and an upper bound. For South Africa the 2025 range runs from 5.1 million to 9.7 million.
Background. The number of people living with HIV worldwide rose 26.2% between 2010 and 2025, from 32.5 million, mainly because people on treatment now live much longer while new infections have fallen. The fastest growth among these 25 countries was in the Philippines, from 19,000 people to 250,000, and in Pakistan, from 76,000 to 340,000. 16 of the 25 countries are in the WHO African Region.
Limits. UNAIDS rounds its country estimates, so several countries share a value: Kenya and Uganda had 1.5 million each, and Kenya's figure was the same as in 2010. The dataset has no 2010 estimate for India, so its trend cannot be measured here. Numbers fell since 2010 in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Thailand and Lesotho. Together the 25 countries account for 73.6% of the world total.
