Drug Overdose Deaths by State 2025
About This Dataset
Drug Overdose Deaths by State 2025How the data is collected. The counts come from provisional death certificate data that the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) at the CDC publishes every month, here for the 12 months ending December 2025. New York combines the separate figures CDC gives for New York City and the rest of the state. CDC also publishes a predicted count that adjusts for late reports; for the whole country it is 70,735.
Background. Overdose deaths fell 12.6 per cent from 2024 and 33.9 per cent from the 106,881 recorded for 2023.
Limits. Provisional counts are tabulated by the state where the death occurred and include foreign residents, while final figures are by state of residence; for 2024 the provisional total was 80,860 and the final one 79,384. The chart shows counts, so large states lead; the rate chart in this series adjusts for population.
California's 9,049 overdose deaths were more than twice Texas's 4,491.
