Electric Car Sales by Country 2025

What this chart shows. The 25 countries that sold the most new electric cars in 2025, counting battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models together. China sold about 13 million, far ahead of the United States with 1.5 million and Germany with 860,000. Worldwide about 21 million electric cars were sold, so China alone accounted for roughly 62% of the global total.

How the data is collected. The figures come from the International Energy Agency's Global EV Outlook 2026 and its Global EV Data Explorer, which gather new-car sales and registrations country by country. An electric car here means a passenger car that can be charged from the grid: battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids count, while conventional hybrids that cannot be plugged in do not.

Background. Global electric car sales rose from about 17 million in 2024 to 21 million in 2025. Sales at least doubled in Turkey, Vietnam, Indonesia and Mexico, and Germany went from 570,000 to 860,000. Three countries in the top 25 sold fewer than a year earlier: United States (1.6 million to 1.5 million), Belgium (190,000 to 180,000) and Canada (250,000 to 170,000).

Limits. The IEA publishes these numbers rounded to two significant figures, which creates ties such as Belgium, Brazil and Vietnam (180,000 each) and Canada, India, Norway and Sweden (170,000 each); the true values differ. For comparison, the European carmakers' association ACEA counted 856,540 battery-electric and plug-in hybrid registrations in Germany in 2025; for the European countries in this chart its totals are within 2.9% of the IEA figures, except France, where ACEA's 435,549 is 3.2% lower.
