Electric Bus Sales by Country 2025

What this chart shows. The 25 countries that sold the most electric buses in 2025, counting battery-electric and plug-in hybrid buses. China sold about 40,000, roughly 57% of the 70,000 electric buses sold worldwide. India followed with 4,300, then South Korea and the United Kingdom with 2,900 each.

How the data is collected. Buses are one of the vehicle types in the IEA's Global EV Data Explorer, with country totals for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models; hydrogen fuel-cell buses are listed separately and are not included here. The explorer also gives the electric share of each country's bus sales, which is used in the text below. Figures refer to new buses sold during the calendar year.

Background. About 62% of new buses sold in China in 2025 were electric. Denmark, at 71%, and Norway, at 62%, were the only other countries in the chart where electric models made up at least 60% of bus sales. The United States sold 1,800 electric buses, down from 3,000 in 2024, and only 2% of its bus sales were electric.

Limits. Bus markets are small, and the IEA's rounding to two significant figures matters more here, which is why Germany and the United States both show 1,800. Small markets can swing sharply from year to year: Uruguay sold 240 electric buses in 2025 after 2 in 2024. South Korea also sold 1,100 fuel-cell buses, which are not counted in its total.
