Electric Cars on the Road by Country 2025
About This Dataset
Electric Cars on the Road by Country 2025
What this chart shows. The 25 countries with the most electric cars in use at the end of 2025, including battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids. China had about 44 million, the United States 7.8 million and Germany 3.1 million. The world total reached about 75 million, and China's share of it was around 59%.
How the data is collected. This is the IEA's "EV stock", the number of plug-in passenger cars on the road rather than the number sold in one year. It comes from the Global EV Outlook 2026 data explorer, which reports the stock for each country and the world at year end and splits it into battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars.
Background. The global fleet grew from about 56 million at the end of 2024 to 75 million a year later. Plug-in hybrids outnumber battery-electric cars in only four countries in this chart, Italy, Spain, Brazil and Finland; in China about 29 million of the 44 million are fully electric. Norway ranks 7th with about 1.1 million electric cars, which the IEA puts at 36% of all cars on its roads, the highest share of any country the IEA covers, ahead of Iceland and Denmark.
Limits. The IEA rounds these counts to two significant figures, so neighbouring countries can show identical values. A large fleet does not mean a high share: Japan ranks 12th with about 720,000 electric cars, yet the IEA puts them at about 1% of its car fleet. Plug-in hybrids are counted as electric cars even though many of their kilometres may be driven on petrol.
