What this chart shows. The 25 countries that produced the most hen eggs in 2024, by weight in thousands of tonnes. China led with 30,857 thousand tonnes, 32.9 per cent of the world's 93.7 million, followed by India with 8,102 thousand and Indonesia with 6,579 thousand.
How the data is collected. The figures come from FAOSTAT, the statistics database of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, which collects national production data through annual questionnaires and fills gaps with its own estimates. Eggs are counted in shell by weight; both China's and India's figures are FAO estimates.
Background. Indonesia produced 6,579 thousand tonnes, slightly more than the United States with 6,469 thousand. World egg production rose 1.7 per cent from 2023.
Limits. Converting weight to egg counts depends on average egg size, which varies by country, so this chart uses weight. Several large producers, including Pakistan, Argentina and Bangladesh, have estimated rather than official figures.
