Wheat Production by Country, 1990-2024

About This Dataset

Wheat Production by Country, 1990-2024
China and India together grow roughly a third of the world's wheat, and consume almost all of it at home. The more surprising movement is downward: United States output has fallen by around 28 per cent since 1990 and France's by a fifth, as growers moved land into maize and soya. Russia carries no 1990 figure here because it was still part of the Soviet Union; it now ranks third and is the world's largest wheat exporter, which is why its harvest, rather than China's, sets the price importers across North Africa and the Middle East pay.
