On 20 September 2026 every cryptocurrency CoinGecko tracks was worth 2,767.50 billion dollars together, spread across 21,342 coins and 1,500 markets. Almost three fifths of that value, 58.72 per cent, was Bitcoin alone. We read five snapshots from CoinGecko's public interface inside the same five minutes, and together they describe a market that is large, extremely concentrated, and a long way below where it has been.

One coin, then everything else

Among the twenty largest cryptocurrencies by market value, Bitcoin stands at 1,628.88 billion dollars. That is 5.07 times Ethereum's 321.44 billion and more than the other nineteen entries on the list put together. Three of those twenty are not bets on a price at all but dollar stablecoins, Tether, USDC and USDS, worth 267.12 billion between them, and the twentieth entry, Stellar, is worth 0.42 per cent of Bitcoin.

The busiest market is a dollar token

The ranking by trading reorders that list completely. Tether, third by value, changed hands 48.62 billion dollars' worth in twenty-four hours, about twice Bitcoin's 23.95 billion and more than Bitcoin and Ethereum combined. Four dollar stablecoins make up 54.2 per cent of the 113.35 billion the top twenty traded. Trading is not a simple function of size either: NEAR Protocol turned over 32.9 per cent of its own market value in a day, while BNB, worth at least eighteen times more, turned over 0.95 per cent.

Stablecoins are a two-name business

Fourteen stablecoins are worth a billion dollars or more, and two of them, Tether at 183.334 billion and USDC at 74.167 billion, make up 84.5 per cent of the 304.75 billion in CoinGecko's stablecoin list. Regulation has started to show up in the data itself: the tracker now keeps a category for MiCA-compliant stablecoins, worth 74.91 billion, and another for coins it labels GENIUS Act compliant, worth 74.38 billion, both led by USDC.

Almost nothing is near its record

Twenty-one of the hundred largest coins trade more than 90 per cent below their all-time high, and 56 are more than half below it. Filecoin is furthest down, 99.6 per cent below a peak of 236.84 dollars set on 1 April 2021, and nine of the fifteen deepest falls date from that single year. Bitcoin's own record, 126,080 dollars on 6 October 2025, leaves it 35.7 per cent below its best.

Eighteen winners out of ninety-two

Eight of the hundred largest coins are too new to have a twelve-month record. Of the other 92, 18 are higher than a year ago and 35 have lost more than half their value. Zcash, up 2,922.0 per cent, is the only coin in the market's top ten worth more than it was, and Monero is up 90.8 per cent. CoinGecko's privacy-coin category, worth 36.95 billion dollars, is now bigger than its meme category at 34.82 billion.

How we checked it

Every figure here comes from CoinGecko, read on 20 September 2026. Prices were compared with CoinPaprika, which agreed within one per cent on every coin in these five charts, although its supply estimates differ: it puts Dogecoin's market value at 15.00 billion dollars against CoinGecko's 13.64 billion. Twelve-month moves were compared with daily closes on Binance, Kraken and Gate, which put Zcash at 2,829 per cent against CoinGecko's 2,922. Trading volume is the one number with no agreement at all: CoinPaprika read Bitcoin's day at 17.46 billion dollars where CoinGecko read 23.95 billion, which is why a volume ranking should be treated as an order of magnitude rather than a measurement.
