The environment section covers emissions, forests, air quality, water, wildfires and natural records such as the deepest lakes and largest deserts. The emissions charts use the Global Carbon Budget and the World Bank, and the wildfire charts use the Global Wildfire Information System via Our World in Data.

Counted over history, the United States is responsible for 17.65% of global warming since 1851 and China for 12.95%. Since 1750 the US has emitted 434.9 billion tonnes of CO2, the most of any country. Per person, Palau led in 2024 at 82.84 tonnes, ahead of Qatar at 47.33. Wildfires burned 35.69 million hectares in Australia in 2025, more than in any other country, and hurricanes Katrina and Harvey each caused about $125 billion in damage.

Charts such as air pollution and forest cover are published for several years in a row, so you can follow the trend for each country.
