About This Dataset

Sunflower Seed Production by US State, 2025
North Dakota leads this eight-state ranking with 1,098.1 million pounds in the 2025 crop year. South Dakota follows with 868.05 million pounds. The first three states account for 91.9% of the combined published state estimates for this crop.

The source is USDA NASS State Agriculture Overviews for 2025, retrieved on October 20, 2026. We checked the numeric production estimates across the state pages. 8 states have a numeric estimate for this crop; all are shown here.

The all-sunflower series combines oil-type and non-oil-type sunflower seed production. This is the weight of the seed crop, not sunflower oil output. The eight states shown are the states with numeric estimates in the USDA overview pages checked. Original production counts are divided by 1,000,000 to express the values in million pounds. No additional rounding is applied to the stored counts.

These are production estimates for the 2025 harvest, not 2026 forecasts. USDA may revise estimates; the overview snapshot is the reference for this ranking. Missing or unpublished state values are not converted to zero. The three-state share uses the combined reported estimates, not an assumed all-state national total.
Analysis

The gap between North Dakota and South Dakota is 230.05 million pounds. Rank is based on total crop production, not the state's land area or exports.
