Typical Home Value by State 2026
About This Dataset
Typical Home Value by State 2026How the data is collected. The Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI) reflects the typical value of homes in the 35th to 65th percentile range of each area, covering single-family homes and condos together, whether or not they were sold. This chart uses Zillow's smoothed, seasonally adjusted series, published as a monthly CSV file.
Background. 10 states and DC had a typical home value of at least $500,000 in August 2026, up from 3 places in August 2020. Hawaii's typical home was worth 4.6 times West Virginia's.
Limits. Redfin's median sale price for May 2026 ranks the states in almost the same order (rank correlation 0.98), but puts California first and Hawaii second, and its prices were higher than Zillow's values in 48 of 50 places. Redfin measures the homes that sold in a month, while Zillow describes the whole housing stock, so the two figures are not the same thing.
Hawaii had the highest typical home value in August 2026, $833,340, 4.6 times West Virginia's $179,496.
