Wool Production by Country 2024

About This Dataset

Wool Production by Country 2024
What this chart shows. The 25 countries that produced the most wool in 2024, in thousands of tonnes. China led with 364.5 thousand tonnes, followed by Australia with 281.0 thousand and New Zealand with 125.0 thousand. The world total was 1.7 million tonnes.

How the data is collected. The figures come from FAOSTAT, the statistics database of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, which collects national production data through annual questionnaires and fills gaps with its own estimates. The item is shorn greasy wool, weighed as it comes off the animal and before washing. New Zealand's figure is an FAO estimate.

Background. World wool production was 16.3 per cent lower than in 2014 and 3.2 per cent lower than in 2023. Australia's output fell 11.6 per cent from 2023 to its lowest level since at least 2014, and New Zealand's also reached a low for the period.

Limits. Because the weights are greasy, they include grease and dirt that washing removes. 16 of the 25 figures are FAO estimates or imputations; they include the United Kingdom, Russia and South Africa.
Analysis

Turkey, fourth with 84.3 thousand tonnes, rose from sixth place in 2014 and grew 5.1 per cent from 2023.
