Marking a title as a favourite is a separate action from scoring it or adding it to a list: a member picks a small number of titles to display on their profile. This ranking orders anime by how many members have made that choice, so each entry represents a deliberate pick rather than a rating.
Background from the source. The favourites list rewards attachment over reach. One Piece, which has been broadcasting since October 1999 and is still running, tops it despite a weighted score of 8.73 - lower than several titles below it. Neon Genesis Evangelion, from 1995, is the oldest entry, and A Silent Voice is the only film in the top ten.
Limits. Members can favourite only a limited number of titles, so entries compete with each other in a way scores do not, and a long series that accompanied someone for years has an advantage over a single strong season. Profiles built up over two decades also carry choices made long ago, which favours shows that were popular when the site's membership grew fastest.
One Piece leads on 256,072 favourites, 10,371 ahead of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on 245,701. The top six run from 256,072 down to Death Note on 187,921, then the list falls away sharply: seventh-placed Naruto: Shippuden has 121,827, barely half the leader's figure. The ten titles hold 1.78 million favourites between them, and the top three alone account for 41 percent of that. Nine of the ten are television series; A Silent Voice, tenth on 97,467, is the only film. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, second on 245,701, has the highest weighted score in this group at 9.11.
