Volcanoes Erupting in 2025 by Volcano Type

About This Dataset
Volcanoes Erupting in 2025 by Volcano TypeThe 63 volcanoes that erupted at some point in 2025, grouped by the primary volcano type the Smithsonian records for each one.
How the data is collected
The volcano list comes from the Global Volcanism Program's page of eruptions active in 2025. Each volcano was matched to the Primary Volcano Type field in the program's Holocene volcano table. The program's own labels are used as they appear, so "Stratovolcano" and "Stratovolcano(es)" are kept as separate groups.
Background
The volcano table in the Volcanoes of the World database keeps a Primary Volcano Type field alongside separate fields for volcanic landform and a written geological summary. The Smithsonian's list of the countries with the most Holocene volcanoes says volcanoes from the last 12,000 years are found in 77 countries plus Antarctica. For its yearly figures, the program counts 63 volcanoes and 71 eruptions active in 2025, with 38 eruptions still continuing at the last update.
Limits
A single type label cannot show everything about a volcano's form, and the database describes landforms and geology in other fields as well. The split between "Stratovolcano" and "Stratovolcano(es)" follows the database's own wording and is not a physical difference that this chart can explain. Type describes the volcano's overall form, not the style of its 2025 eruption.
Stratovolcanoes dominate the 2025 list: 29 volcanoes carry the single "Stratovolcano" label and 13 more are "Stratovolcano(es)", so 42 of the 63 are some form of stratovolcano. Calderas are next with 8, and shield volcanoes, including Kilauea and Erta Ale, number 6. Complex volcanoes account for 4. Three types have one volcano each: crater rows (Reykjanes in Iceland, which erupted twice in 2025), a fissure vent on the East Pacific Rise seafloor, and a lava cone (Bagana in Papua New Guinea).
