Countries With the Most Erupting Volcanoes in 2025

About This Dataset

Countries With the Most Erupting Volcanoes in 2025
What this chart shows
The countries with at least two volcanoes that were erupting at some point during 2025, counted by volcano rather than by eruption. A volcano that had two separate eruptions in the year is counted once.

How the data is collected
The Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program lists every confirmed eruption active during a given year on its "What was erupting in the year...?" page, which draws on the Volcanoes of the World database. For 2025 it lists 71 confirmed eruptions from 63 different volcanoes, reported through the database update of 31 March 2026. Each volcano on that list was counted once under the country the database gives it.

Background
The Global Volcanism Program explains that its yearly totals include activity that took place during any part of the year, so an eruption that began in an earlier year and was still going in 2025 counts for 2025. It also warns that the human calendar has no effect on geological processes, and gives the example that around 45 eruptions may already be continuing from the previous year. Its list of the countries with the most Holocene volcanoes notes that volcanoes on a national border are counted for each country that claims them.

Limits
A count of volcanoes does not separate a small steam explosion from a large eruption, and one volcano's long, continuous eruption counts the same as a single burst. The Smithsonian's conclusion is that the apparent rise in eruptions over recent decades reflects better reporting, especially from satellites, rather than more volcanism, so counts from different eras are not comparable. One volcano on the 2025 list is filed under "Undersea Features" rather than a country and is not shown.
Analysis

Indonesia had the most volcanoes in eruption during 2025 with 10, four more than Japan on 6. Russia is third with 5, and Papua New Guinea and the United States follow with 4 each. The Philippines had 3. Ten more countries, from Tonga and Vanuatu to Italy and Guatemala, had exactly two. Together the 16 countries shown account for 52 of the 63 volcanoes the Smithsonian lists as erupting in 2025. The full list has 26 country entries, including Antarctica, plus one undersea volcano.
