Countries With the Most New Volcanic Eruptions in 2025

About This Dataset

Countries With the Most New Volcanic Eruptions in 2025
What this chart shows
The countries where new volcanic eruptions started during 2025, counted by eruption. A volcano that had two separate eruptions begin in the year counts twice, as happened at Purace in Colombia, Reykjanes in Iceland and Telica in Nicaragua.

How the data is collected
The Global Volcanism Program's list of eruptions active in 2025 gives a start date for every eruption. The chart counts the 29 eruptions whose start date falls in 2025 and groups them by country. One of the 29 started on the seafloor, filed by the Smithsonian under Undersea Features, and is not shown.

Background
The Smithsonian calls the number of eruptions that start or end in a year a better way to compare annual eruption rates than the total active at some point, because long eruptions carry over from year to year. For 2025 it records 29 eruptions started and 30 ended. Its yearly table gives the highest explosivity for those new eruptions as VEI 2 or less for 24 of them, VEI 3 for four and VEI 4 for one.

Limits
Each new eruption counts the same whether it lasted a day or is still continuing. The three-month rule means a volcano that pauses and resumes can record a "new" eruption even though activity is part of the same episode in a broader sense. Start dates in remote places can be approximate, and the list is only complete up to the database update of 31 March 2026.
Analysis

Japan had the most new eruptions in 2025, with 4, at Kikai, Kirishimayama, Ioto and Akan. Indonesia and Russia each had 3 new eruptions. Colombia, Iceland, Nicaragua and the United States had 2 each; in Colombia, Iceland and Nicaragua both came from one volcano, Purace, Reykjanes and Telica. Ten other countries had one new eruption. Russia's three include Krasheninnikov, which was still continuing at the last data update. Ethiopia's single new eruption, at Hayli Gubbi in November, is the only eruption that began in 2025 with a maximum VEI of 4.
