About This Dataset
Most Widely Reported Earthquakes of 2025 (USGS 'Did You Feel It?')How the data is collected: USGS says DYFI collects information from people who felt an earthquake and uses it to create maps of what people experienced and the extent of damage. Anyone can submit a report online. The catalogue's "felt" field is the total number of reports submitted for each event.
Background: the value is a count of reports submitted, so it reflects how many people chose to report an earthquake as well as how widely it was felt. USGS also uses the reports to compute a maximum reported intensity for each event, which describes how strongly shaking was experienced rather than the earthquake's size at its source.
Limits: 14 of the top 15 were in the United States, and large earthquakes elsewhere received far fewer reports, so this ranking should not be read as a list of the world's most strongly felt earthquakes. The chart is a measure of public response, not of strength or damage.
The most widely reported earthquake of 2025 was the magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Greenback, Tennessee on 10 May, with 45,935 felt reports. It was followed by the magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Julian, CA (42,638) and the magnitude 3.8 near York Harbor, Maine (42,440). Most of the top 15 were moderate: 13 were below magnitude 5, and the largest was a magnitude 6.0 earthquake near Susitna, Alaska on 27 November. For comparison, the magnitude 8.8 Kamchatka earthquake received 125 reports.
