Near-Earth Asteroids Discovered per Year 2000-2025

About This Dataset

Near-Earth Asteroids Discovered per Year 2000-2025
What this chart shows: the number of near-Earth asteroids discovered in each year from 2000 to 2025, according to NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies.

How the data is collected: CNEOS credits each discovery to the survey that made it and publishes the yearly counts by survey; the totals here add up all surveys for each year. The data file is dated 12 September 2026. Near-Earth asteroids are asteroids whose closest point to the Sun (perihelion) is less than 1.3 astronomical units.

Background: in 2025 the surveys credited with the most discoveries in CNEOS's breakdown were Pan-STARRS (1,289), Catalina (880), Other-US (555), with the remainder grouped as Others (333), ATLAS (164), LINEAR (18). CNEOS also tracks separately how many known near-Earth asteroids are larger than about 140 metres and about one kilometre, the size classes used for planetary defence.

Limits: the counts show discoveries, not the total number of near-Earth asteroids that exist. The figures are as of the file date, 12 September 2026, and later versions of the file may differ.
Analysis

3,239 near-Earth asteroids were discovered in 2025, the highest yearly total in the series and 8.9 times the 363 found in 2000. Annual discoveries first passed 1,000 in 2013, 2,000 in 2017 and 3,000 in 2021. The count dipped in 2018 (1,838) and 2023 (2,915) before recovering. Pan-STARRS was credited with 1,289 of the 2025 discoveries, 40% of the total, and Catalina with 880. Between 2000 and 2025 CNEOS's survey data records 39,704 near-Earth asteroid discoveries in all.
