Asteroid Flybys Closer Than the Moon by Month 2025
What this chart shows: how many known asteroids passed closer to Earth than the Moon's average distance in each month of 2025. NASA's close-approach table lists 189 such flybys for the year.
How the data is collected: the counts come from NASA JPL's Small-Body Database close-approach data, filtered to approaches within one lunar distance (about 384,000 km, as CNEOS defines it) between 1 January and 31 December 2025. Each asteroid-flyby pair is counted once, in the month of its closest approach. The data was retrieved in September 2026, so asteroids discovered after a 2025 flyby are included if their orbits were known by then.
Background: CNEOS calculates close approaches for every known near-Earth object, and the great majority of near-Earth objects are asteroids. The objects that come this close are mostly small; an asteroid has to be larger than about 140 metres, with an orbit that can bring it within 0.05 au (about 7.5 million km), before NASA classes it as potentially hazardous.
Limits: the chart counts flybys that have been detected. Month-to-month differences can reflect how many flybys were detected as well as how many took place, so the chart should not be read as a measure of changing risk.

Analysis
October had the most asteroid flybys closer than the Moon, with 33 of the year's 189. April, June, July and August each had the fewest, 9. The second half of the year recorded 116 flybys against 73 in the first half, and September to November alone accounted for 82, 43% of the total. On average there were about 16 such flybys a month, or roughly one every 1.9 days.
