About This Dataset

Countries Where Patients Pay Least Out of Pocket 2023
The twenty countries with the lowest out-of-pocket health spending (% of health costs) in 2023, from World Bank figures for the 170 countries that reported that year. Tuvalu records the lowest figure at 0.04, with Nauru (0.73) and Marshall Islands (1.05) next. The share of total health spending that patients pay directly at the point of care. A high share means the cost falls on households rather than on insurance or the state, and it usually goes with low total spending.
Analysis

Tuvalu (0.04), Nauru (0.73) and Marshall Islands (1.05) record the three lowest figures. Across the twenty shown, values run from 0.04 up to 9.38, a spread of 9.34. Nauru, the next country up, records 18.25 times the figure for Tuvalu. No other country in the table is within double the lowest figure of 0.04. The chart shows the twenty lowest of 170 reporting countries, so it describes the bottom of the distribution rather than the world average. Countries recorded as zero are left out: the World Bank writes zero where a country did not report.

  • Entities are ranked lowest-first, because on this measure a lower number is the better result.
