Countries with the Lowest Maternal Mortality 2023
About This Dataset
Countries with the Lowest Maternal Mortality 2023
The twenty countries with the lowest maternal deaths (per 100,000 births) in 2023, from World Bank figures for the 194 countries that reported that year. 2 countries share the lowest figure of 1.00, among them Belarus, Norway and Australia, with Australia (2.00) next. Deaths of women from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, per 100,000 live births, modelled by a UN inter-agency group. Where few women die each year the estimate carries a wide uncertainty range, so the exact order among the lowest countries should not be read too closely.
Analysis
2 of the twenty shown are level at the bottom on 1.00: Belarus, Norway. The next country up is Australia on 2.00. Across the twenty shown, values run from 1.00 up to 4.00, a spread of 3.00. 5 of the 20 sit within double the lowest figure, 2.00 or less. The chart shows the twenty lowest of 194 reporting countries, so it describes the bottom of the distribution rather than the world average. Countries recorded as zero are left out: the World Bank writes zero where a country did not report.
