Countries ranked by total patent applications filed with intellectual property offices in 2024 according to WIPO World Intellectual Property Indicators. China became the world's largest patent filing country in 2011 and has widened its lead substantially since — filing over 1.6 million patent applications in 2024 through the National Intellectual Property Administration, more than triple the volume of the United States and reflecting a national innovation strategy that treats patent filing as a metric of technological development.
Analysis
China heads the table on 1,640,000, ahead of United States (600,000) and Japan (289,000) in Patent Applications Filed in 2024. 1,604,000 separates the highest figure (1,640,000) from the lowest (36,000).
