Countries by Coffee Consumption Per Capita 2024

Eight countries ranked by how much coffee each person drinks in a year, measured in kilograms of green coffee equivalent and reported by the International Coffee Organization for 2024. Finland leads on 12.0 kg per person, ahead of Norway on 9.9 kg and Iceland on 9.0 kg.

Twelve kilograms a year works out at roughly 33 grams of coffee a day. Depending on how strongly it is brewed, that is somewhere between three and five cups every day of the year, for every person in the country — infants and the elderly included, since per-capita figures divide national consumption by the entire population rather than by coffee drinkers.

The shape of the table is unusual. Finland's lead over second-placed Norway is 2.1 kg, and the entire remaining field, from Norway down to Belgium on 6.8 kg, spans only 3.1 kg. In other words, one country accounts for most of the variation in the list; the other seven are clustered fairly tightly. Finland drinks 1.76 times as much per head as Belgium, the lowest entry here.

Every country in this ranking is European, and five of them are Nordic: Finland, Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden. None of them grows a single coffee bean. The comparison to keep in mind is that the world's largest coffee producers — Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia — do not appear anywhere near the top of consumption tables measured this way, because production and consumption are separate questions and most exported coffee is drunk somewhere else.

One caveat on the measurement: figures are given in green (unroasted) coffee equivalent, which is how the trade reports volumes. Roasting removes moisture, so the weight of roasted coffee actually bought in shops is smaller than these numbers imply.
