About This Dataset
10 Largest Reported EU Rail Passenger-Distance Totals, 2025
Germany and France lead reported EU rail passenger-distance totals in 2025, at 111.764 and 110.618 billion passenger-kilometres. Eurostat rail_pa_typepas is filtered to annual frequency, total national plus international transport (tra_cov TOTAL) and MIO_PKM; millions of passenger-kilometres are divided by 1,000 to obtain billions. One passenger-kilometre means one passenger transported one kilometre. Detailed reporting covers main railway undertakings, defined by at least 100 million passenger-kilometres annually; this is not a complete census of every operator. The ranking selects the ten largest values among 24 EU countries with public numeric observations. Belgium is confidential; Cyprus and Malta have no railway coverage. Missing values are not zero, and the API's EU total is also confidential. No selected value has a source flag, and no cutoff tie occurs. The October 30, 2026 Eurostat release supplies a verified news hook. Winter travel planning is a plausible seasonal use, not evidence of rising search demand. These 2025 activity totals are not unique passenger counts, rail-network lengths, resident travel distances, service quality or winter 2026 bookings.
Analysis
The 24 published country totals sum to 456.854 billion passenger-km. Germany and France together account for 222.382 billion, or 48.68% of that reported-country sum; the top ten account for 91.89%. This is explicitly a share of the 24 public observations, not of a complete EU total. Germany exceeds France by 1.146 billion passenger-km.
