About This Dataset
All-Sector Electricity Prices by State 2024EIA compiles annual electricity sales and revenue from the EIA-861 family of forms. The average retail price is revenue divided by electricity sold within the selected sector or combined sectors.
The total combines residential, commercial, industrial and transportation sales. It is weighted by electricity sold, not an equal average of sector prices.
These are annual state averages for 2024, not current tariffs or individual price quotes. Customer accounts are not people. Washington, DC, territories and regional totals are excluded. Values are rounded to two decimal places.
The combined-sector US price is 12.94 US cents/kWh; 14 states have higher averages. Hawaii leads at 38.00, followed by California at 27.04, while North Dakota is lowest at 7.93. The national benchmark includes Washington, DC and uses sales weights rather than equal weights for states or sectors.
