About This Dataset
Average Monthly Residential Electricity Use by State 2024EIA compiles annual residential sales and customer counts from the EIA-861 family of forms. Average monthly consumption is annual electricity sales per residential customer account divided across the months of the year.
This measure covers electricity sold to residential customer accounts. It measures grid purchases rather than all energy used in a home.
These are annual state averages for 2024, not current tariffs or individual household readings. Customer accounts are not people. Washington, DC, territories and regional totals are excluded. Values are rounded to whole kWh.
28 states are above the US benchmark of 863 kWh per month. Consumption runs from 495 in Hawaii to 1,202 in Louisiana, with Mississippi at 1,156. The national figure includes Washington, DC and is calculated from customer totals, not the simple mean of the states.
