About This Dataset
Average Monthly Residential Electricity Bill by State 2024The US Energy Information Administration uses annual utility sales, revenue and customer data from the EIA-861 family of forms. Average monthly bills are annual residential revenue divided by customer accounts and months.
The bill combines electricity use and the average retail price. A higher unit price does not by itself determine the largest monthly bill.
These are annual state averages for 2024, not current tariffs or individual bills. Customer accounts are not people. Washington, DC, territories and regional totals are excluded. Values are rounded to two decimal places.
Hawaii records 212.12 USD per month; Connecticut follows at 199.66. The lowest value is New Mexico at 92.88. 21 states exceed the national benchmark of 142.26 USD per month. That benchmark includes Washington, DC and is weighted using the underlying sales, revenue or customer totals; it is not the simple mean of these state bars.
