About This Dataset
States That Added the Most Wind Power in the Past Year 2026
What this chart shows. The increase in utility-scale wind capacity between July 2025 and July 2026, in megawatts, for the 19 states where it grew. New Mexico added 4,082 MW, 39.3% of the national increase of 10,397 MW, followed by Oklahoma with 966 MW and Texas with 901 MW.
How the data is collected. The figure is the difference between two monthly snapshots of net summer capacity in EIA's Electric Power Monthly, so it includes new wind farms, repowering of old ones with larger turbines, and any retirements. It reflects plants reported as operating, not those under construction.
Background. Massachusetts went from 102 MW to 900 MW as the offshore Vineyard Wind project came online, putting the state fourth with 798 MW. Wyoming added 590 MW, Colorado 511 MW and Arizona 500 MW. Capacity fell in 4 states, most in California, which lost 56 MW.
Limits. A single large project can dominate a state's number for the year, so these rankings change sharply from one year to the next. EIA's monthly figures are preliminary and are revised when annual plant data are finalized. States whose capacity did not change are not shown.
