States That Built the Most Wind Turbines in 2025
About This Dataset
States That Built the Most Wind Turbines in 2025
What this chart shows. Wind turbines with a project year of 2025 in the U.S. Wind Turbine Database, by state. New Mexico led with 828, followed by Texas with 507 and Oklahoma with 255. In all, 3,156 turbines were built in 2025, including 62 offshore in federal waters, which are not shown.
How the data is collected. The project year is the year a wind project or phase began operating, as recorded in the database from project announcements and interconnection data. Turbines are added once they appear on aerial imagery and in aviation filings, so a project counts here only when its turbines are physically standing.
Background. 3,156 turbines is more than in any year from 2022 to 2024 but well below the peak of 6,660 in 2012. All 828 of New Mexico's 2025 turbines are listed only by county, in Lincoln, San Miguel and Torrance, because their project details had not yet been entered. EIA data show New Mexico adding 4,082 MW of wind capacity in the year to July 2026.
Limits. Counts are of turbines, not capacity, and the average turbine built in 2025 has 4.1 MW of capacity, against 1.5 MW for one built in 2005. The 2025 figures will change slightly in later releases as late-recorded turbines are added and unnamed projects are identified.
