States With the Most Wind Power Capacity 2026
About This Dataset
States With the Most Wind Power Capacity 2026How the data is collected. The U.S. Energy Information Administration surveys every power plant of 1 megawatt or more each month and publishes net summer capacity by state and energy source in its Electric Power Monthly, Table 6.2.B. Summer capacity is the maximum output a plant can deliver during peak summer demand.
Background. National wind capacity rose 6.7% in a year, from 155,064 MW in July 2025. Iowa and Oklahoma swap places depending on the measure: Iowa has more turbines, Oklahoma more capacity. Wyoming, with 4,584 MW, ranks higher on capacity than on turbines; its turbines average 2.8 MW, against 2.2 MW nationally.
Limits. EIA assigns offshore wind farms to the state where they connect to the grid, so Massachusetts shows 900 MW mainly because of Vineyard Wind, while the turbine database leaves those turbines without a state. Capacity summed from the turbine database matches EIA within 5% in 29 of the 37 states with more than 100 MW; the largest gaps, such as New Mexico, come from new turbines not yet linked to a project.
Texas had 43,987 MW of wind capacity in July 2026, 26.6% of the U.S. total of 165,461 MW, which grew 6.7% in a year.
