States With the Most Wind Turbines 2026
About This Dataset
States With the Most Wind Turbines 2026How the data is collected. The database is maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the American Clean Power Association. It starts from the Federal Aviation Administration's obstruction filings, which every tall structure needs, then checks the location of each turbine on aerial imagery and adds project and turbine details. It is updated several times a year.
Background. Turbine counts and generating capacity do not always rank states the same way, because newer turbines are much larger. California has 4,947 turbines, more than Kansas with 4,415, yet Kansas has far more capacity: 9,651 MW against 6,447 MW, and 42.6% of California's turbines were built before 2000. Texas alone has more turbines than the next three states combined.
Limits. The database covers utility-scale turbines and leaves out small turbines on farms and homes. 124 offshore turbines in federal waters, at projects such as Vineyard Wind and Revolution Wind, are not assigned to any state and are not shown. 63 turbines in Puerto Rico are also excluded. Recently built turbines are sometimes listed before their project details are known.
Texas has 19,943 wind turbines, 25.6% of the 77,839 in the U.S. Wind Turbine Database and more than the next three states combined.
