Wind Share of Electricity Generation by State 2025

About This Dataset

Wind Share of Electricity Generation by State 2025
What this chart shows. The 20 states that got the largest share of their electricity generation from wind in 2025. Wind turbines produced 58.9 per cent of Iowa's utility-scale generation, followed by South Dakota at 57.2 per cent and Kansas at 47.0 per cent. Nationally, wind supplied 10.5 per cent.

How the data is collected. The share is wind generation divided by total net generation from utility-scale plants in each state, both from EIA's Electric Power Monthly, which collects plant output on Form EIA-923.

Background. Only four states got more than 40 per cent of their generation from wind, all of them in the central United States. Texas produced by far the most wind power, 129.5 TWh or 27.9 per cent of the US total, but ranks 12th here because it also generates a great deal from other sources.

Limits. A state's share of generation is not the same as its share of consumption, because states that export power, like the Dakotas, sell much of their wind output to neighbours. Wind output also varies from year to year with the weather.
Analysis

Oklahoma, fourth at 41.8 per cent, generated 38.0 TWh from wind, only 5.7 TWh less than Iowa.
