Residential Electricity Price Increase by State 2025
What this chart shows. The 25 states, counting the District of Columbia, where the average residential electricity price rose the most in 2025 compared with 2024. The District of Columbia led with a rise of 23.9 per cent, from 17.71 to 21.94 cents per kilowatt-hour, followed by New Jersey with 17.0 per cent and Maine with 14.4 per cent.
How the data is collected. The change is calculated from EIA's average residential prices for full-year 2025 and full-year 2024 in the February 2026 Electric Power Monthly. Prices are not adjusted for inflation.
Background. Nationally, the average residential price rose 5.0 per cent, from 16.48 to 17.30 cents. Prices rose in 48 of the 51 and fell only in Hawaii, North Carolina and Nevada; Nevada had the largest drop, 12.3 per cent.
Limits. An average price can rise because tariffs went up or because the amount and timing of household use changed, and this data does not separate the two. The 2025 figures are preliminary.
