Gas Share of Electricity by Country 2025

What this chart shows. The 20 countries that relied most on natural gas for electricity in 2025, as a share of generation, among the 78 countries in Ember's data that generated at least 10 TWh. Qatar led with 95.9 per cent, followed by Tunisia at 94.9 per cent and Oman at 91.9 per cent. Gas supplied 21.7 per cent of the world's electricity, down from 22.3 per cent in 2024.

How the data is collected. The share is electricity from gas-fired power plants divided by total generation, from Ember's yearly dataset. Other fossil fuels such as oil are counted separately. For the United States the gas share, 40.0 per cent, matches the US Energy Information Administration's figures.

Background. Gas dominates in countries that produce it, such as Qatar and Oman, and in places with few other options, such as Singapore. Israel had the largest rise among the 20, from 71.4 to 79.7 per cent. In Taiwan the gas share rose from 43.3 to 48.7 per cent while nuclear fell from 4.2 to 1.1 per cent.

Limits. Several of the most gas-dependent countries have no 2025 figure in the release and are missing: in 2024 gas made up 99.7 per cent of Bahrain's electricity and 98.6 per cent of Algeria's, more than Qatar's share. World gas generation was almost flat, 6,880 TWh in 2024 and 6,896 TWh in 2025.
