Coal Share of Electricity by Country 2025

What this chart shows. The 20 countries that relied most on coal for electricity in 2025, as a share of their generation, among the 78 countries in Ember's data that generated at least 10 TWh. South Africa led with 81.4 per cent, followed by India at 70.8 per cent and Serbia at 65.0 per cent. Coal's share of world electricity was 33.1 per cent, down from 34.1 per cent in 2024.

How the data is collected. The share is the electricity generated from hard coal and lignite divided by total generation, from Ember's yearly dataset. It covers power plants only; coal burned directly in factories or homes is not included.

Background. Ember's review reports that fossil generation fell in both China and India in 2025 as clean power grew faster than demand. In its data China's coal generation went from 5,828 to 5,772 TWh and India's from 1,518 to 1,474 TWh, while coal generation in the United States rose from 652.2 to 737.1 TWh.

Limits. Indonesia, which generated 61.5 per cent of its electricity from coal in 2024, has no 2025 figure in the release and is missing. The 10 TWh threshold also leaves out Kosovo, at 88.9 per cent, and Mongolia, at 85.8 per cent.
