Solar Share of Electricity by Country 2025

What this chart shows. The 20 countries where solar made up the largest share of electricity generation in 2025, among the 78 countries in Ember's data that generated at least 10 TWh. Hungary led with 27.3 per cent, ahead of Chile at 25.1 per cent and Spain at 21.9 per cent. Worldwide solar supplied 8.8 per cent of electricity, up from 6.9 per cent in 2024.

How the data is collected. The share is a country's solar generation divided by its total electricity generation in the same year, both from Ember's yearly dataset. Generation is measured where the power is produced, so electricity imported from neighbours is not counted.

Background. Hungary, Chile, Spain, the Netherlands and Pakistan got more than a fifth of their power from the sun in 2025. Pakistan's share rose from 12.6 to 20.7 per cent in one year, and Sri Lanka's more than doubled, from 8.0 to 17.6 per cent. Ember's review names Chile and Australia as leaders in adding batteries that shift midday solar power to other hours.

Limits. The 10 TWh threshold leaves out small systems: North Macedonia, at 31.1 per cent, and Luxembourg, at 30.5 per cent, would otherwise top the list. Countries without 2025 data, such as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq, are absent as well.
