States Where Property Crime Fell the Most, 2015-2025

What this chart shows. How far the property crime rate fell between 2015 and 2025 in every US state and the District of Columbia, in per cent, in the FBI's estimates. Idaho had the largest fall, 65.4 per cent, from 1,749.2 to 605.0 offenses per 100,000 residents, followed by Indiana at 59.5 per cent and Florida at 58.2 per cent. The smallest falls were in Vermont, 2.0 per cent, and New York, 2.0 per cent. The national rate fell 38.6 per cent, from 2,500.5 to 1,534.8.

How the data is collected. Property crime here is the sum of burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft in the FBI's estimated crime file; arson is not included in the estimates. The chart compares each state's rate in 2025 with its own rate in 2015.

Background. The FBI counts property crime as offenses whose object is taking money or property without force or threat of force against the victim. The estimated number fell from 8,024,115 in 2015 to 5,245,768 in 2025.

Limits. Property crime is dominated by larceny-theft, so this chart mostly tracks thefts, many of which are never reported to police. States where fewer police agencies reported in 2025 than in 2015, such as Florida and Louisiana, rely more on FBI estimates in the later year.
