States Where Robbery Fell the Most, 2015-2025

What this chart shows. The fall in the robbery rate in every US state and the District of Columbia from 2015 to 2025, in per cent, from the FBI's estimates. Robbery fell in all 51 places. West Virginia had the largest fall, 80.0 per cent, from 42.5 to 8.5 per 100,000 residents, followed by Indiana at 77.2 per cent and Louisiana at 74.9 per cent. Oregon had the smallest, 6.1 per cent. Across the country the rate fell 51.7 per cent, from 102.2 to 49.4.

How the data is collected. The chart divides each state's estimated robberies in 2015 and in 2025 by its population in those years, using the FBI's estimated crime file, and compares the two rates. The FBI fills in figures for police agencies that sent no data, and in some states the share of residents covered by reporting agencies changed a lot over the decade, which adds uncertainty to the comparison.

Background. The FBI counts robbery, taking something of value from a person by force or threat of force, as a violent crime. Nationally the number of robberies fell from 328,109 to 168,927, more than halving in ten years, while the population grew.

Limits. Large percentage falls can come from small numbers in thinly populated states. Florida and Louisiana are examples of changing coverage: agencies covering 99.8 per cent of Florida's residents reported in 2015 but 81.6 per cent in 2025, and in Louisiana coverage fell from 98.2 to 77.3 per cent.
