States Where Burglary Fell the Most, 2015-2025

What this chart shows. How much the burglary rate fell in every US state and the District of Columbia between 2015 and 2025, in per cent, using the FBI's estimates. It fell everywhere. New Hampshire had the largest fall, 80.4 per cent, from 261.8 to 51.4 burglaries per 100,000 residents, followed by Maine at 77.7 per cent and Rhode Island at 76.9 per cent. The smallest fall was in Colorado, 36.7 per cent. Nationally the rate fell 60.9 per cent, from 494.7 to 193.6.

How the data is collected. Each value compares a state's burglary rate in 2025 with its rate in 2015, both taken from the FBI's file of estimated crimes, which covers every year from 1979 and is revised as each new year is added. The rate is the estimated number of burglaries divided by the state's population. Where fewer police agencies report, more of each figure is an FBI estimate: agencies covering 99.8 per cent of Florida's residents reported in 2015 but 81.6 per cent in 2025, and in Louisiana coverage fell from 98.2 to 77.3 per cent.

Background. The FBI defines burglary as the unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or theft, whether or not force is used. The number of burglaries in the country fell from 1,587,564 in 2015 to 661,800 in 2025, the largest fall of any major offense in the FBI's figures over the decade.

Limits. A percentage change over ten years says nothing about the level: a state can have a large fall and still a high rate. Burglaries not reported to police are missing from both years.
