Aggravated Assault Rate by State 2025

What this chart shows. The aggravated assault rate in every US state and the District of Columbia in 2025, per 100,000 residents in the FBI's estimates. Alaska had the highest rate at 520.6, followed by New Mexico at 511.2, Louisiana at 443.4, Arkansas at 425.3 and the District of Columbia at 415.6. Maine had the lowest at 53.2, with Connecticut at 62.2 and New Hampshire at 70.0. The national rate was 238.0, compared with 257.6 in 2024.

How the data is collected. The figures come from the estimated crime totals the FBI releases for every state, turned into a rate per 100,000 residents. Aggravated assault shows the closest agreement between the FBI's estimates and its reported data of the five offenses here: within 6 per cent in every place where agencies covering at least 95 per cent of residents reported.

Background. The FBI defines aggravated assault as an unlawful attack by one person on another to inflict severe or aggravated bodily injury, usually with a weapon or by other means likely to cause death or great bodily harm. An attempted attack involving the display of, or threat to use, a gun, knife or other weapon also counts. Aggravated assault is the largest part of violent crime: 72.6 per cent of the national total in 2025.

Limits. Because aggravated assault makes up most of violent crime, this ranking looks much like the overall violent crime ranking. It fell less than other violent crimes, and the rate rose in 8 states: Alaska, Louisiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, Kentucky, Utah and New Hampshire.
