Rape Rate by State 2025

What this chart shows. The rate of reported rapes in every US state and the District of Columbia in 2025, per 100,000 residents in the FBI's estimates. Alaska had the highest rate at 118.8, followed by Arkansas at 69.3, Utah at 63.7, Montana at 62.5 and Oklahoma at 59.5. Connecticut had the lowest at 15.4, with New Jersey at 16.3 and Delaware at 17.5. The national rate was 36.1, compared with 39.2 in 2024.

How the data is collected. The FBI publishes an estimated total of rapes for each state in its Crime Data Explorer, including estimates for agencies that did not send data, and the rate here is that total per 100,000 residents. Checked against reported figures in places where at least 95 per cent of residents were covered, the gaps reach 10 per cent, wider than for most offenses.

Background. Since 2013 the FBI has counted rape under a revised definition: penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim. The older definition, carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will, was dropped from reporting from 2017, and these figures use the revised one.

Limits. The figures count offenses reported to police, and many rapes are never reported, so differences between states can reflect reporting as well as crime. The rate rose in Utah, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and New York; in New York it went from 21.4 to 26.6.
