Burglary Rate by State 2025

What this chart shows. The burglary rate in every US state and the District of Columbia in 2025, as burglaries per 100,000 residents in the FBI's estimates. New Mexico had the highest rate at 404.9, followed by Oklahoma at 365.3, Louisiana at 326.2, Washington at 314.2 and Nevada at 311.5. New Hampshire had the lowest at 51.4, with Maine at 78.6 and Connecticut at 81.6. The national rate was 193.6, down from 231.0 in 2024.

How the data is collected. The rate divides each state's estimated number of burglaries, from the FBI's Crime Data Explorer, by its population. Those estimates include figures the FBI calculates for police agencies that did not report. Where agencies covering at least 95 per cent of residents did report, their own totals came within 10 per cent of the estimates; the widest gap was in Utah, where the reported rate was 10 per cent lower.

Background. The FBI defines burglary as the unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or theft, and force does not have to be used for an offense to count. Its three subclasses are forcible entry, unlawful entry without force and attempted forcible entry. A structure includes a house, an apartment, an office, a barn or a railroad car, but not a car.

Limits. Burglaries that are never reported to police are not in the figures. Unlike most crime rates, the District of Columbia is not near the top here: it ranks 21st at 193.6, exactly the national rate. Only Alaska and New Hampshire had a higher rate than in 2024.
